Confessions of a Beauty Product Junkie

Image Some may be asking themselves what exactly is a beauty product junkie?

A beauty product junkie is one who consistently purchases and/or overuses various skin, body, makeup and hair products. While taking care of oneself is important, it’s also necessary to take caution so it’s not overdone. This is possible, believe it or not.

With beauty products and their enticing advertisements flooding stores, radios, televisions, and the internet, promising the best results and astonishing satisfaction, it’s hard not to be a beauty product junkie. The next best thing is always going to be out there. Whether it’s for your face, body, hair, or nails it’s imperative you are consistently using the right products and using them wisely.

Most junkies experience the same pitfalls and upset in the satisfaction department. The products are purchased and used for a fraction of the amount of time it would take for them to kick in and actually make a change. Most products, no matter what function they are used for, will take 4 to 8 weeks to see some kind of change or improvement. Aside from possibly having too high of hopes from a product, a junkie cannot resist a sale or a good deal. For those who have been to Bath and Body Works or Victoria’s Secret during one of their sales, the hard-to-resist factor is easy to understand. Are seven shower gels and body lotions really necessary? Probably not but they were on sale.

Here are a few tips to remember when it comes to beauty products:
• Do not over treat skin. Most believe their skin is “sensitive” and it’s because of the acidic products that are used. It happens all the time.
• Keep a daily skin care regimen down to four products. By using more, more harm than good is a big possibility.
• For hair, face, and nails use what’s been bought until it’s finished! If it’s not getting the job done return it and replace it. Too often a product is pushed to the side and then put back into “the rotation” when it’s stumbled upon months later. That’s highly unsanitary and unhygienic. Bacteria will grow in those products.
• Be consistent when using beauty products that address a specific concern or problem area. Be patient and allow the product the necessary time before moving on to something else.
• Our skin changes and so should the products. Adjust a skin care regimen and other treatments to suit your skin right now. That moisturizer that’s worked fantastically since you were 25-years old will not keep you happy when your 50. Talk to your esthetician about better suited products for your face and body and see your hair stylist for special hair concerns. Trust the professionals!
• Makeup does have an expiration date and it does get old. Foundation, concealer, powder, and lipsticks are good for one year. Eyeshadow, eyeliner, lip liner and blush varies from two to three years. Mascara needs to be discarded after three months.
• Always remember: patience is a virtue. Try to resist the sales and over purchasing of unnecessary products. If that’s not possible, give your guilty little pleasures away as gifts.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with loving beauty products and being a beauty product junkie, so long as it’s kept under control. If there are more beauty products than food in the house there may be a problem.

Image October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and individuals, businesses, and organizations will be joining together to paint the nation PINK! The purpose of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to raise awareness and fund research for the most common cancer among women. Research states that 1 in 8 women in America will be struck with breast cancer in their lifetime.

Sherryl Ford, Founder of Facelogic Int’l, was diagnosed in 2005, only six months into realizing her entrepreneurial dreams. She had just opened her first Facelogic Spa when doctors diagnosed her with one of the more aggressive forms of breast cancer. But, Sherryl attacked her disease with the same tenacity she has for her business. She endured a lumpectomy, several weeks of the most aggressive chemotherapy and a life threatening blood clot in her neck. She prevailed, fighting the fight against cancer and winning.

After treatment, Sherryl founded the Facelogic Healing Heart Foundation hoping to raise awareness for a different aspect of the cause. “Through Facelogic Healing Heart, I want to help ease the emotional trauma that comes from the physical changes caused by breast cancer,” said Ford. “One of my biggest fears was losing my hair when I underwent chemo. Naturally, this did happen and it was extremely difficult to deal with the reality of what I was going through.” While in chemo and recovery, she met so many women that were struggling emotionally with the side effects of breast cancer. The cost of treatments can be overwhelming and the care associated with recovery requires commitment from an entire family. Even a patient’s self-esteem may be impacted from hair loss, skin damage, and lack of energy. These are just a few of the many challenges that patients and survivors face, but there are programs to provide support.

This October, Facelogic Spas across the nation will be raising money for the foundation through membership and product sales. Facelogic International will contribute the funds to the American Cancer Society “Look Good, Feel Better Program”. As part of the program, women are given lessons on post-treatment skin care, make up lessons, and hair or wig styling. This collaboration was created from the concept that if someone with cancer can be helped to look good, their improved self-esteem will help them approach their disease and treatment with greater confidence.

Another program that local cancer doctors have started is called DIVA, which stands for Deriving Inspiration and Vitality through Activity. It is a nutrition and exercise program specifically designed to provide women with breast cancer the life-saving opportunity for improved health. The program is based on research that shows that women who exercise have lower mortality from breast cancer and less chance for reoccurrence. DIVA provides a place where patients and survivors can go to exercise together and be educated about the important role a low-fat diet and exercise can play in their prognosis and recovery. DIVA is free to any patient with a breast cancer diagnosis and a new location for the program is starting up in Stone Oak this month.

Many retailers, doctors, and schools will be offering ways for the public to show support for the cause this month. So THINK PINK!

Image Remember Bashful, the cute, shy dwarf in Disney’s Snow White? His blushing rosy cheeks were such a charming quirk. But for those who experience the permanent “Bashful” cheeks, life can be less charming.

Incredibly, over 14 million Americans agonize over their permanent ‘rosiness’. This skin condition is called Rosacea. It can affect anyone, but, not surprisingly, is most common in those fair-skinned individuals of Northern European descent. Individuals with Rosacea flush or blush easily and often complain of skin irritation. It is most often diagnosed in women, but may be more severe in men.

Unfortunately for some, the permanent redness and bumpy skin can affect their self-esteem and impact social interaction. Being well-educated on the condition and its outbreak triggers can keep the disorder from intruding on daily life.

Characterized most commonly by redness of the cheeks, nose, and chin, symptoms may come and go throughout life. If left untreated, the redness may lead to visible blood vessels, bumps, and pimples. Surveys have shown that women experience the symptoms on the cheeks and chin, while men are more likely to have redness and swelling on the nose. When blood vessels become visible during the primary stages of Rosacea they contribute to the overall ‘red-faced’ look for which Rosacea is known. Skin may begin to look rough and dry in more advanced stages and facial discomfort is common. Signs and symptoms may also occur beyond the face on the neck, chest, and scalp.

The cause of Rosacea is still unknown. However, researchers continue to find triggers and possible causes but not one single source has been found to blame. The most common triggers are sun exposure, emotional stress, hot weather, heavy exercise, alcohol consumption, and spicy foods. Some physicians believe that Rosacea may be a vascular or nervous system disorder since there is a direct correlation between flare-ups and the above triggers. There are also theories that a microscopic mite called Demodex folliculorum could be a contributor.

While promising new products might grab your attention for a quick fix to treat Rosacea, treatment options are varied and relatively simple. If you think you are a candidate, keep track of those possible triggers. The National Rosacea Society recommends keeping a ‘Rosacea Diary’ in which weather, consumption, and activities are charted on days when flare-ups are experienced. Avoiding the triggers will reduce flare-ups that could deter Rosacea’s progress.

As with any skin disorder, a customized skin care routine is vital to ensuring the treatment of the condition as well as the prevention of further damage. Cleanse twice daily with a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser and lukewarm water. The blue primer counters the redness, can be used under foundation, and even contains SPF 30 for complete protection. When choosing makeup, look for natural yellow tones, avoiding foundations and powders with pink or orange hues.
